Let's say I have a project with a list in it. Then I create a new task in the inbox. It doesn't seem like there is a way to move that task into the existing list. I think I understand why list item and tasks are separate entity types, but it still seems like it would be useful to be able to take a task and turn it into a list item.

You can certainly do this! Just drag the list item sort handle (not the reorder handle for the entire task / list), and move the list item over onto another list then release the mouse button to complete the cross-list drag and drop action.
