Dependencies/Gantt Chart Timeline update?

I have already posed this request to Pagico via a personal email request, but wanted to get some reaction from fellow users so as to push this request further along if possible?

I would like to have tasks linked so that any date changes can push other tasks along in the same way that Gantt Charts do. This means that there needs to be an option to link tasks, and an option to create dependency relationships between tasks etc. similar to other Project Software such as QuickPlan, SG Project, Microsoft Project to name a few.

This would then allow an opportunity for a template to be able to be set up for typical workflows, and then a new start date for the first task would automatically push all other tasks within the project along. Perfect for forecasting, and would be a time saver when copying projects that have similar tasks...all you would need to do is change the date for the first task and you would have another project on the Timeline established very quickly onto the Dashboard.

 

Anyone else agree or have insights to share on this??

  Steve & Michael,

  Thanks for the great thoughts! Both of you are correct --- we do not intend to go into heavy-weight project management software in a conventional sense, something that may be too complex for who this project is for. But we do see the value of task dependency. This has been always on our list, and hitting a balance between user experience and feature is our priority. I'm sure we'll be able to get it done.

  I agree that this would be a great feature to have, but it would take Pagico much deeper into full-blown project planner territory. I wonder if this is a direction the developers are really planning to take?

  I don't think Pagico will head towards being a Project Management Application....I agree this may possibly complicate the current intent of Pagico.

  But, perhaps it may not be difficult to at least be able to link tasks so that date changes could push dependant tasks along the timeline?

  It's tedious to have to re-establish start and end dates for every task when the project has to be re-scheduled for a new start date.

  I'd like to see this feature added. I asked for it last year and it wasn't clear if it would ever be seen.

  Microsoft Project is silly expensive and there is nothing much else other than some stand-alone iPad apps.

  If Pagico is really just a task list, it is expensive! If it is a project [planning] app, then it is probably too cheap!

  I understand that it should go where its customers are; or where they want to be. The sync between computer and mobile is useful but updating a project is a lot of hassle right now!

  Thanks for coming on board! I concur that Pagico needs to strive to make it easier and more efficient by creating task dependencies so that projects can be updated easier!

  I think its only a matter of time.

   

  Custom Templates with a work flow OR gantt chart set up for typical task procedures could be created, and then just edit the start date and the whole project would be set up very quickly! That would be a game-changer for Pagico!!

  I'd like to see the time line show 2 and 3 year options, not just 1 year.

  Also when adding in the tasks, it would be great if you could create a task with a duration like 120 days. So the start and end dates could be calculated based on that number.

  This would be a great feature.  I think it should be thought of differently than professional project management.  ie, we're not trying to model the costs and resources for a massive project, we're trying to answer questions like:

  a. "what tasks can I do now?"  Having dependencies would enable a view where any task that is dependent on another task not yet complete would be hidden.

  b. "what's blocking progress?"  Having dependencies would enable the software to give feedback such as "you scheduled task A to be due on Thursday, but this task is dependent on Task B which you haven't scheduled yet!  Would you like to schedule it for Wednesday?"

  I would be happy to participate in developing use cases / requirements for such a feature.

  I go with Michael. And I also agree with all who say that Pagico should not go into the direction of a full-fledged project develeopment tool, since this would destroy Pagico’ easy-to-use charm. Honestly, I use Pagico because most PM tools are far too overblown for my needs and complicate things rather than simply them.

  But simple dependencies would be a great addition and the same counts for making the timeline a bit more flexible as far as ordering items and selecting the displayed span of time are concerned.

  Thank you for your continued interest in this topic! We decided to postpone task dependency as it potentially introduces too much complexity, which does not align well with the main design targets for Pagico. We are currently working on a number of things to make bulk task manipulation easier, and we hope to get those changes out to you in the upcoming update (8.18) in the next few weeks.

  Hmm, new version, still no dependencies?

  I would actually challenge the statement that dependencies make things more complex. Planning gets easier if I can rely on tasks moving together as I reschedule them. Once I connected the tasks, I will never have to worry about all the different interconnections again.

  I concur with @mat_rhein... Dependencies simply cognitive load by making sequential tasks visibly sequential and easier to relocate.

  I don't want to add to my cognitive load through my task management app.

  And just to re-emphasize.... adding dependencies does NOT mean adopting the complexities of Microsoft Project which was designed for automated project planning with a complex formula that is cognitively complex and confusing.  That's not the model we need!

  Instead we need only simple dependencies which we can then employ to lighten our cognitive load as Mat and Adam have mentioned.

  This is something I would love to see as well. I ran into this issue almost immediately. I am a luthier, and despite having many custom projects with slightly different requirements, the process and timeline of building an instrument varies little. It would be nice to be able to create a template where once I start a project, I know that seven days after that, I should have the whole thing glued up and ready for paint. Having to select due dates for dozens of individual tasks can be tedious and mentally draining, especially when there are several instruments going at once.

  The complexity and capability of full-blown project management software is far more than I would ever need as an individual craftsman, and is what led me to Pagico in the first place. However, adding dependencies would transform it from super-useful tool to killer app for me.

  @Harry,

  Thank you for your input! What you described can probably be achieved with project templates --- setting up a project and creating all the dates in it. Then clone it with a different date any time you're starting a new project. Check out the second half of this article on how to use this feature:
